What Does Comprehensive Care Encompass?

Comprehensive care typically includes annual wellness exams but can also cover any services your pet may need, such as surgery, behavioral and nutritional counseling, and diagnostic testing.

What Happens at a Comprehensive Exam

The core of comprehensive care begins with an annual pet exam. During this exam, the veterinarian will be able to identify any issues that require immediate attention and provide preventative treatments to keep your pet healthy throughout the year. It's recommended that puppies and kittens receive their first exam between 4–6 weeks of age. Healthy adult pets should have an exam every year, while senior pets may need two or more physicals a year, depending on their overall health.

What to Expect

A typical exam begins with a discussion of any concerns you may have while making your pet feel comfortable. The veterinarian will then conduct a thorough head-to-tail exam that includes:

  • Checking vital signs (including temperature and weight)
  • Inspecting the ears, eyes, and nose for abnormalities
  • Performing a dental check
  • Listening to the heart and lungs
  • Examining the skin and coat for parasites and other issues
  • Palpating the internal organs
  • Observing stance and gait for potential joint problems
  • Conducting fecal and blood tests (to check for parasites and infections)

Upon completing the physical, the vet will administer flea, tick, and heartworm medication. Vaccinations are usually given during these exams as well. The veterinarian will discuss nutrition and exercise and address any problems found during the exam. If applicable, they may suggest scheduling an appointment to have your pet spayed or neutered, microchipped, or to add supplements to their diet.
