Puppy & Kitten Care

How to Prepare for Your New Puppy or Kitten

When you decide to adopt a puppy or kitten, it's vital that you be prepared. Welcoming a new pet is a bit like welcoming a new baby; you'll need supplies and must puppy or kitten-proof your home. Start by clearing a space for their bed, crate, litter box, food, and water. Next, secure your home by removing plants and flowers that could be toxic, removing wires from the floor, and keeping fragile objects in a safe place. Once that's done, it's time to hit the pet store. You'll need:

  • Bed
  • Food and water bowls
  • Collar/leash
  • Puppy or kitten food
  • Treats (for training)
  • Toys
  • Brush and comb
  • Toothbrush
  • Pet toothpaste
  • Crate (for puppies)
  • Litterbox (for kittens)
  • Wee wee pads (for pups)

The Veterinarian’s Office

It’s important to bring your puppy or kitten to the vet within the first week of bringing them home. At Pardeeville Veterinary Hospital, we provide our new patients with a thorough nose-to-tail exam, ensuring they are on track with growth and development. We test and check for parasites such as fleas, heartworm, and intestinal worms, and treat any issues accordingly.

On the first visit, your pet will receive the first of several rounds of vaccinations. Kitten vaccinations and puppy vaccinations are vital to prevent serious diseases from attacking their vulnerable immune systems. We’ll also discuss spaying and neutering, nutrition, potty training, and any concerns you may have.
